Artist Shelly Porter

Kathryn Barnett Johnson was raised with a passion for all things artistic. She was classically educated as a youth and gained a rich knowledge of timeless literature, theology, art, music, dance, and history. Born in California to a Navy pilot and the daughter of a Corpus Christi pastor, Kathryn was introduced to many interests, but knew early on that art was her great love. Upon moving to Corpus Christi she began her formal training in painting at the age of 14 and honed her skills in watercolor, oil and acrylic as well as igniting a lifelong love for teaching. She would later go on to study Studio Art and Art History at Del Mar College, Laguna Gloria School of Art in Austin and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Kathryn began teaching art in various Classical and Christian private schools around the country. Upon moving back to the Coastal Bend in 2010, she developed a K-12th grade art program and curriculum from the ground up for Annapolis Christian Academy, which received ACCS (Association of Classical Christian Schools) Accommodations in 2021. Kathryn recently moved to Lexington, Kentucky where she is again developing a high school classical art program for Trinity Classical School.

For Kathryn, art cannot be separated from its historical and cultural roots. Her faith is an essential part of her life and artistic inspiration. Her own work is layered with a generous use of symbolism, a tool she wields to reveal deeper theological truths. As an artist and art educator she sees art as a way to engage with God, others and ourselves through the universal language of artistic expression. She believes Truth, goodness and beauty are the essential means that communicate the human experience no matter what time period, culture or ethnicity. Art is one of the beautiful gifts that connect us to God and to one another.
